17-year-old Russian tennis player breaks records at the Grand Slam tournament
Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva has become the youngest semi‑finalist of a Grand Slam tournament in the last 27 years, the press service of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) reports.
The 17‑year-old Russian defeated world number two Arina Sobolenko from Belarus in the quarterfinals of the French Open (6:7, 6:4, 6:4) and she made it to the semifinals.
She became the youngest semi-finalist of a Grand Slam tournament after Swiss tennis player Martina Hingis, who in 1997, at the age of 16, managed to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros and the US Open.
Andreeva also became the youngest tennis player to defeat a rival from the top 2 of the WTA rankings at a Grand Slam tournament since 16‑year-old Jelena Dokic from Australia beat Hingis in the first round of Wimbledon in 1999.
Andreeva will compete with Italian Jasmine Paolini for reaching the final of Roland Garros.
