Paris becomes the second city after London to host the Summer Olympic Games for the third time. The French capital has already hosted competitions in 1900 and 1924, and now it is reopening its streets and stadiums for participants. France, in turn, will host its sixth Olympic Games. In addition to the three Summer Games, the country organized the Winter Olympics in Chamonix (1924), Grenoble (1968) and Albertville (1992).
Breakdancing became an Olympic sport for the first time
The 2024 Olympic Games program includes 32 sports and 306 competitions. One of the main innovations will be the breaking dance style, which will become an Olympic sport for the first time. The participants, known as B-boy and B-girls, will be judged on technique, dexterity, strength, rhythm, creativity and style.
The emblem and mascot of the 2024 Olympics
This year, the Olympics and the Paralympics will share a single emblem combining three symbols: Marianne (symbol of the French Revolution), a flame and a gold medal. The mascot of the Olympics was the red Phrygian caps, personifying freedom. The Olympic mascot is a cap in white sneakers, and the Paralympic one is a cap with a prosthesis.
An outdoor marathon and a piece of the Eiffel Tower
For the first time in the history of the Olympiad, everyone will be able to participate in the official marathon. Professional athletes will start earlier, and then the track will be open to everyone. The Olympic medals will be decorated with hexagonal fragments made from elements of the Eiffel Tower – a total of 5,084 medals will be issued.
Opening ceremony and events in Paris
The opening ceremony of the Olympics will be held on the Seine River, which will be an innovation in the history of the Games. Viewers will be able to watch the events on a five-kilometer route along the embankments, which is ten times the capacity of a typical Olympic stadium. This year, some competitions will be held in iconic places in Paris: beach volleyball – on the Champ de Mars under the Eiffel Tower, urban sports – on Concord Square, fencing and taekwondo – in the Grand Palais, and the marathon starts from the Hotel de Ville.
